Ulupō Heiau is a massive stone platform, about 140 by 180 feet, on the edge of Kawainui Marsh at 1200 Kailua Road. It became a territorial park in 1954, was partly restored in the early 1960s, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Kawainui, once a fishpond of about 400 acres, is now the largest remaining wetland in Hawaiʻi and has been a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 2005. When the heiau gate is closed, the State asks visitors to park in the adjacent YMCA lot and walk in.
