From Kalapawai to the Shoreline: Walking Kailua's Beach Town Breakfast

As morning breaks over Kailua, the scent of freshly brewed coffee drifts through the air, drawing locals and visitors alike to start the day with a leisurely breakfast. For many beachgoers, fueling up before hitting the sand is part of the routine. Our walk begins at Kalapawai Market, which has been serving Kailua since 1932 and sits by the entrance to Kailua Beach Park. Its beach location serves coffee, breakfast and deli food, and in the morning the room fills with lively chatter.

Kalapawai is the last stop before the sand, and it makes sense to grab what you need there: commercial vendors are not allowed inside the beach park. If you want more choice, Kailua town, a short drive or bike ride inland along Kailua Road, has plenty of cafes and eateries, each with its own character. On weekend mornings they fill with families, surfers and beachgoers gathering for a meal before the day begins. The relaxed pace makes for a delightful start.

From Kalapawai it is only a short walk to the shoreline. The sound of the ocean grows louder, and the salty air mingles with the smell of the coffee in your hand. The beach town's laid-back atmosphere is infectious, and it is easy to fall into the gentle rhythm of the morning, with the trade winds still light before they build later in the day.

In Kailua, breakfast is more than just a meal. It is a time to say hello to neighbors, savor local flavors and get ready for a day of sun, sand and surf. As we reach the water's edge, we are left with a deeper appreciation for the simple joys of this coastal town.
