During World War II, Kailua played an important role as a military base and training ground for the US military. The area's beaches and surrounding landscape made it an ideal location for amphibious landing training and other military exercises. The US military also established a number of bases and facilities in the area, including the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, which is still in operation today.
