What is being done about coastal erosion at Kailua Beach Park?

Erosion has narrowed the beach over the past few decades, most visibly between Kailua Road and the park's boat ramp. DPR, the City's Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency, the State DLNR Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands, Hawaiʻi Sea Grant and community volunteers removed undermined ironwood trees and old infrastructure, moved sand back to the shoreline and installed sand fencing. Volunteers have planted native dune plants, protected by post and rope fencing, to hold wind-blown sand in place. Use the marked pathways to the water and stay out of fenced planting areas.
