In Hawaiian, Kailua means "two seas" or "two currents", a name linked to the two former fishponds, Kawainui and Kaʻelepulu, or to two currents in Kailua Bay. Hawaiians settled early around Kawainui, farming taro and raising fish. Kailua became a residential seat of Oʻahu's ruling chiefs until Kamehameha I conquered Oʻahu in 1795 and power moved to Honolulu. After the 1848 Māhele most land passed to a few owners and later to ranching. Kailua Beach Park began in 1920, when the Territory of Hawaiʻi transferred land to the City for a public beach park.
