Fishponds, irrigated taro fields and good canoe landings supported the chiefly household. Ulupō Heiau, beside Kawainui, is linked to high chiefs including Kākuhihewa and Kualiʻi. After Kamehameha I defeated the Oʻahu army at the Battle of Nuʻuanu in 1795, the seat of power moved from Kailua to Honolulu.
